CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
FOUNDATION CLASS
All students at HYPAXIS are asked to take Foundation Class. Foundation work is both parallel and ‘turned out’ - it co-relates and creates personal and individual understandings of musculature and structure (anatomy), kinesiology (movement), and growth changes. Foundation Class creates a beginning awareness and later understanding of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual integration - whether students go on to become serious and professional dancers, basketball players, doctors, lawyers or Indian chiefs. It offers some personal understanding and possibly a pre-disposition toward good health. “Foundation” Class is where we can renew and understand just how we are put together today. Over the years I have become more and more convinced that these classes give each person ~at any age, a deep and almost profound sense of “I am”. They bring an increasing awareness of personal make-up - physically as we grow, shift and change; mentally as we are more and less able to assimilate and use information; and emotionally, as we reflect the influences of our daily lives in the way we move, our posture and gestures. Foundation Classes are both a challenge and a resting place. They serve to inspire little ones; encourage advanced and professional level dancers to understand their instrument - their human body- in movements that defy time and space; for adults, foundation movement can bring a quiet understanding, a place to rest in themselves. I believe the process of the foundation classes for each age and skill level is essential in understanding ever more complex patterns. Basic skills multiply swiftly. In understanding the Neuro-musculo-skeletal make-up (our nerves, muscles and bones) - students can learn quickly in a Ballet or Modern Dance class or track. They can participate in Theater Dance, Jazz and Ethnic Dance Classes and really move their bodies, not copy a step. Foundation IV+~ From Foundation IV and up, classes will be considered Intermediate through Advanced and Professional. These classes will include basic isolation, internal and external warm-ups and stretches with applications of intermediate and advanced skills in foundation techniques based in modern dance, ballet and contemporary dance. Foundation IV+ will include both standing and floor warm-up, center and diagonal work as well as spatial combinations and dance combination work for discovery, excitement and the development of new movement!. Class Dress: Tights, Leotards, comfortable moveable clothing.
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUE
Modern Dance classes will be taught in Horton and Lewitsky, Graham, Taylor, Cunningham, Limon-based and Dunham techniques.
Contemporary Class will reflect the emerging trends of today in both classical and modern dance. Class Dress: Bare feet, Comfortable clothes, Footless/Ankle tights w/colored leotards.
HORTON TECHNIQUE ~ Beginner through Advanced classes will be taught in the anatomical technique of Lester Horton. There will be both a floor stretching and barre warm-up with spatial applications across the floor, en diagonal and in combinations. Class Dress: Tights, leotards and appropriate jazz or heeled shoes should be worn for these classes, or bare feet.
CONTEMPORARY BALLET ~ May be taken only with permission to study this aspect of movement with Ms. Persch. Anatomically based and evolving from a strong classical ballet base; this class both in warm-up and movement explores spatial and body possibilities in movement to both strengthen the dancer and help to prevent injuries through personal physical, mental and emotional understandings. May be taken en pointe. Class Dress: Pink Tights/Pink Ballet shoes
CONTEMPORARY DANCE ~ May be taken only with permission. This class is a fast moving contemporary class based in Modern techniques. It requires an anatomical understanding and the desire to stretch one’s personal vocabulary of movement. There will be quick warm-up followed by combinations and repertory exploration. Barefoot and shoed classes. Class Dress: Footless/Ankle tights w/colored leotards/comfortable & moveable clothes.
INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED & PROFESSIONAL BALLET ~

Strength and ‘dance’ barres For Intermediate through Advanced and Professional dancers. May be taken with or en pointe. Repertory & performance work may develop from classes. ESOTERIC & SACRED MOVEMENT CLASSES
The Tai Chi, Eurythmy for Children & Adults, Sacred Movement and the BRIAH Movement Classes and Workshops may only be scheduled with an enrollment of at least 6 committed students. Level II for each of these classes will meet for at least ½ hour before the entire group meeting for additional lecture and materials. Fees will be appropriately charged for the 1 hr., 1 ½ hr. and 2 hr. classes.
TAI CHI at HYPAXIS teaches the ancient form of movement found throughout Eastern histories. This class will offer an understanding of the philosophical histories and times. Beyond ‘the form’ - is an order: the process, the diligence and the skill. It is a journey toward health and the discovery of well-being and balance, supported in movement; painting, flower arrangement, meditation and inspiration.
EURYTHMY Classes for Children and Adults - Though I did not complete my Eurythmy Training, I feel the private tutoring in Dornach from Frau Zuccoli and an elder who lived and learned from Rudolph Steiner is invaluable. Together we translated texts and worked with wonderfilled movement. This I can gladly share with children and adults with a bright spirit and happy soul. Eurythmy encompasses universal life... It is not for everyone - though we all should have the experience. Eurythmy allows and insures us of our innocence and our human-ness. It inspires our imagination and enkindles our intuition. It is my pleasure....
SACRED MOVEMENT is an investigation of various movement forms rooted in the human spirit and dedicated to the ascent of man. We will look at various traditions from Tibetan to Native American; Lemurian to Atlantean; folk to royal/court dance; healing ceremonies to church movement and understand - ‘why’.
TEACHER TRAINING COURSE
This class is open to teachers of dance - in all styles and disciplines in Ballet, Modern and Contemporary Dance. Dance and movement will be explained from an anatomical perspective with care given to explanations of age-appropriate exercises and stresses to students: physically, mentally and emotionally. Various styles and techniques will be explained anatomically and historically (including Russian, European, American Ballet; Graham, Cunningham, Horton, Dunham Modern dance and Contemporary Dance) with a built in understanding of how and when ( age appropriateness) to use a particular technical base for placement, turns, balon ( jump), extensions and stretch, strength and endurance; aerial, standing , partnered and floor exercises. With a greater vocabulary of movement, teachers can be more creative in class format and structure. Students can be ‘cross-trained.’ With anatomical understanding of the ‘how’ of a movement, teachers can often trouble shoot potential injuries, physical difficulties in students and even participate in rehabilitation from injuries. The use of tone, rythmn, color and imagery for all classes will be introduced. This class will be scheduled based on interest. Minimum enrollment of 5 teachers.
